Propaganda, public relations and spin

Interested in spin and public relations? Read “Propaganda” by Edward Bernays. It was published in 1928 – you decide if it is still relevant today. Google it and you should find the full text.

Bernays, a nephew of Sigmund Freud, called public relations the “engineering of consent” (As an aside, Stalin had a similar concept on art, calling it the “engineering of the soul”.)

To quote from Bernays’ work:

“…….. If we understand the mechanism and motives of the group mind, is it not possible to control and regiment the masses according to our will without their knowing it?”

Bernays thought it was possible, if you influenced the leaders of public opinion. Would that be the media? It seems that today, those who need to influence public opinion still concentrate on getting the media on their side.
