For 2009, government statistics showed the UK private sector as having 3,613,975 businesses registered with no employees. “No employees” means proprietorships and partnerships comprising only the self-employed owner-manager(s), and companies comprising only one employee director.
The total turnover for these 3,613,975 businesses was £239,559,000,000, giving them an average turnover of just under £66287 each. When you consider that business expenses have to be deducted from this figure, it shows that, on average, self employed incomes cannot be that high. It will be interesting to see what the turnover figures for 2010 and 2011 will be.
