When I worked for charities, there were always requests from social groups for guests speakers for their meetings, lunches and dinners. I did several and enjoyed every one – and there was nearly always a donation for your cause.
Doing some research, I didn’t realise that the market for speaking engagements had moved on to actually being paid a fee, sometimes up to £50, for speaking about your favourite subject. There are even directories of speakers for this market.
I also found a report that gave information on public speaking keyword searches. By far the most popular were wedding speeches; the least popular: presentation skills. (The amount of courses run on “presentation skills” – such an uninspiring title.)
Of course, the commercial market for weddings is only for writing the speech – I haven’t heard of an actual wedding speech by the bride’s father or best man being sub-contracted yet. But as a modest sideline, public speaking still seems to offer some opportunities.
